We are seeking an experienced Nurse Practitioner (NP) to support the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. This role provides high-acuity, evidence-based care to wounded Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen in one of the nation’s premier military medical facilities.
This is an on-site position in a fast-paced, collaborative ICU environment caring for critically ill surgical patients throughout the perioperative and postoperative continuum.
Perform comprehensive histories, physical exams, and ongoing assessments for critically ill patients
Develop, implement, and adjust plans of care in collaboration with surgeons and medical staff
Provide care for patients requiring ventilator support, vasopressors, and invasive monitoring
Order, interpret, and manage labs, diagnostic testing, and imaging
Prescribe medications, therapies, labs, and X-rays within scope of practice
Perform minor procedures within scope in the SICU and clinic settings
Manage postoperative care, including discharge planning and follow-up calls within 48–72 hours
Assess and manage pain; educate patients and families on pain management strategies
Utilize evidence-based practice and current clinical guidelines in patient care
Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, conferences, and team meetings
Serve as a clinical resource and mentor to nursing staff, residents, and NP students
Complete timely and accurate documentation, including progress notes and discharge orders
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited program
Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program (NPP)
Minimum 2 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner in medical and surgical settings
Current, unrestricted NP license
Board Certification (ANCC, AANP, or equivalent national certifying body)
DEA registration for Schedule II–V controlled substances
Certifications required:
BLS (AHA)
BCLS
ACLS
PALS
U.S. Citizenship required for access to government systems
Surgical ICU or critical care experience
Experience caring for postoperative and high-acuity surgical patients
Familiarity with advanced wound care and invasive treatment modalities
Monday through Friday
8-hour day shifts
No remote option (on-site clinical role)
